Is Your College Student’s Tech Covered While Away at School?

Heading off to college is an exciting milestone, whether your student is moving into a residence hall at Iowa State, the University of Iowa, UNI, or a local campus near Sioux City. Today’s college students carry thousands of dollars in technology everywhere they go, including laptops, smartphones, tablets, noise-canceling headphones, and high-end gaming consoles.

A common question we hear at The Hoffman Agency from parents preparing for move-in day is: Will my homeowners insurance cover my child’s electronics if they are stolen or damaged at school?

The short answer depends heavily on whether your student lives on-campus in a dorm or off-campus in an apartment. Understanding the limits of your current policy—and why a dedicated renters insurance policy is often the smartest move—can save you from a major financial headache during the school year.

On-Campus Dorms vs. Off-Campus Apartments

Where your student sleeps at night determines how their personal property is insured under your existing coverage.

On-Campus Dorm Rooms

If your student lives in an official university dorm room and is under 26 years old, their belongings are typically covered under your Homeowners Insurance policy as “personal property away from home”. However, there are two major catches parents need to know:

  • The 10% Sub-Limit: Most home insurance policies limit coverage for off-premises belongings to 10% of your total personal property limit. While that is usually enough for a dorm room, special sub-limits often apply specifically to electronics.
  • High Deductibles: If your home policy has a $1,000 or $2,500 deductible, filing a claim for a stolen $1,200 laptop might leave you with little to no payout after paying the deductible—and it puts a claim on your primary home policy.

Off-Campus Apartments and Houses

Once a student moves into an off-campus apartment or rental house, coverage under a parent’s homeowners policy usually drops significantly or ends entirely. Most landlords for off-campus housing in college towns actually require tenants to carry their own renters insurance policy before signing a lease.

What Renters Insurance Covers for College Students

A standalone renters insurance policy is designed specifically to protect a tenant’s personal belongings and personal liability. For college tech, a policy provides key protections:

  • Theft On and Off Campus: If a backpack containing a laptop and tablet is stolen from a library table, a coffee shop, or a parked car, a renters policy covers the replacement cost.
  • Covered Property Damage: If a burst pipe in an apartment floods the living room and ruins a gaming setup or television, renters insurance steps in to replace those electronics.
  • Liability Protection: If a guest trips over a charging cable in your student’s apartment and suffers an injury, renters liability coverage helps pay for medical expenses and legal defense.
  • Low Deductibles: Unlike a home insurance policy, a renters insurance policy typically carries a low deductible—often $100 to $250—making it much easier to replace a stolen laptop without breaking the bank.

Replacement Cost vs. Actual Cash Value

When setting up renters insurance for a college student, make sure the policy is written with Replacement Cost Coverage rather than Actual Cash Value (ACV).

Actual Cash Value factors in depreciation. If a three-year-old laptop is stolen, an ACV policy will only pay what a three-year-old laptop is worth today, which might only be $200. Replacement Cost coverage pays out what it actually costs to buy a brand-new, comparable laptop in today’s market.

Affordable Peace of Mind for the School Year

The best part about renters insurance is its affordability. For most college students in Iowa, a comprehensive policy costs between $10 and $15 a month. For less than the price of a couple of coffees, your student can protect thousands of dollars in essential academic technology and personal electronics.
